Job hunting. Now ChatGPT is incredibly useful for anyone who’s looking to start a new role, try and get themselves a better job. It can do so many different things to help. It’s just crazy. It’s actually a complete game changer. And I suspect very, very soon we’re going to start seeing all kinds of AI software specifically for candidates who are looking for a new job, and also existing sites that will start integrating this technology into their existing services. So let’s get stuck in and let’s talk about what ChatGBT can do right now to help you if you’re looking to get a new job. Well, the first thing is resume writing and editing, or CV writing and editing, as we would say in the UK. And it can guide and refine your writing. It can give you tips on the content that you should have in your resume, professional phrasing, skill high level highlighting, and then give feedback and improvements on your resume. So you can literally copy and paste it into chatGBT and ask it to improve it. And I’m going to do this for you. We’re going to go through a practical examplewith some real data that I’ve got here that we can put into chat GPT and get it to start doing this stuff.

And as usual, as with all my lessons, I’ve got a ton of prompts for you as well. Next thing it can do is cover letter assistance. Of course, after the CV, in fact, arguably, perhaps even more important than the CV is a good cover letter. Because if the cover letter is awful and that’s the first thing the potential employer reads, then they probably won’t even look at your resume. It can guide you to writing a perfectly tailored letter specific to the job that you’re applying for. And this is what I really like about it too. When you’re applying for a job, there’s always going to be slight differences between the last job that you applied for, even if it’s the same role. It’s going to be little details about that particular company that would make having a unique letter for that company do a much better job. Well, you can take chat GPT’s expertise, get it to rewrite the letter for you, and then it will be perfectly aimed at that particular job role, increasing your chances of getting through the door, at least for an interview. And speaking of interviews, interview preparation, it is brilliant at preparing you for an interview because it knows in many cases the questions that you’re liable to be asked if you’re applying for that certain position.

So if, for example, you’re applying to be a software engineer for a specific coding language, then it knows many of the questions that a potential employer is maybe going to put to you at the interview. And so it can prepare you for the interview by running through a mock interview, which is incredible. Job search strategy as well. It can help you to find places to look for a job, specifically for the role that you’re after, how to network effectively, and then also how to follow up with potential employers after you’ve been for an interview or after you’ve submitted your application. So it isn’t just a case of applying and then you leave it alone. Obviously, a good idea is to follow up with that particular job application and ChatGBT can do a really good job of helping you write letters or emails to do that. Career advice. Now, this is perhaps a more broad subject that you wouldn’t think that ChatGBT would be able to help with. But actually, because it knows all of the job roles that are out there, it knows what’s involved with each job role, and how certain job roles are connected to each other.

And if you’re doing this particular role, then you might be able to pivot into another type of role that’s very similar that your skills would transfer to. Then it can give you some really good career advice. And it might say, for example, you said, Well, I love outdoor sports. I’d really love to have a job in the outdoor industry some way or another, but I understand that they’re quite low paid jobs. What are the higher paying jobs that would allow me to work outdoors in the outdoor activity business? And then it would be able to tell you because it knows all the average salaries and things for all these different roles. So it can do things that you perhaps wouldn’t think of as well. So as it says there, chat triptee can provide information about different careers, including the skills required, potential career paths, and pros and cons. And I think the pros and cons is also very, very useful to determine whether or not perhaps that role would be for you. If you’re looking to apply for something, you might be thinking all about the pros and the money, but there might be some cons you hadn’t thought about either.

So best to do all this before you get busy applying. The other thing that chatGBT can do so well is to teach you just about any different subject. For example, if you were going to go for a job in sales, but you hadn’t done sales for, say, five or six years, you were a bit rusty on your sales techniques, what better way than to get chatGBT to start educating you in the basics of sales and closing techniques so that it’s fresh in your mind before you go into that interview. Really useful for that. And of course, it can even teach you languages and everything now. And you’re going to see a lot more software apps as well starting to use AI so that you can converse with AI, a chat bot, actually speak to it in that language, and it can come back to you in that language and so on. Right at the time of the interview, doing this training, that’s not possible in chat GBT. You can always type it out. You can have a written conversation with chat GBT in any language and get it to test you on some things. However, you’re not in a conversational way.

Negative negotiating job offers is another way that perhaps people haven’t thought about. But when you’re in a job and maybe you’ve been in there a while and you feel like you’re giving really good value in your role and you really probably deserved of a higher salary, well, you can brainstorm with chat GPT and get it to come up with ideas and suggestions as to how to secure a higher salary. Or if you’ve been offered a job, then it can help you also increase the offer, basically, and all of the benefits that perhaps come with the role. So you can negotiate a little bit with the help of a pretty much a negotiating expert who has read everything there is to know about negotiating and obtaining jobs and everything else. So it’s handy to have someone else to bounce off. And then finally, building a personal brand. I think this is the other main thing. When you’re applying for a job, I can pretty much guarantee you, especially if it’s a higher paying job, maybe not a low paid role, working at Subway or McDonald’s or something. But quite often people will now just search you up online and go onto Facebook as well and Instagram and see what you’re really about.

Go and find out about the real you. Go on LinkedIn and make sure your whole profile is up to date and go and have a look and see if your experience does match that that you mentioned on your LinkedIn profile. Anything that you want improved in terms of that, then chat GPT can really help you. So you can take the contents of your LinkedIn profileand your description of yourself and everything, and it will help improve that for you so that when people do search you up online, all they’re going to find is this incredible person who is perfect for the job. So that’s the basics of what chat GPT can actually do for you. So we’re in Chat GPT now, then I’m going to put it on GPT 4. And the first thing that I’m going to do is I’m going to copy and paste in a fictitious resume. Here it is. Well, we’ll put it in right here and we’ll submit that so you can see it. And what I’ve put there is this is my resume that I want you to learn from when applying for a job in a moment. And then I put the name and everything else, all the details of previous career history.

And then straight away, it started giving me feedback on that, which it’s saying here, sure, I’ve analyzed your resume and it’s impressive. You have a strong background in software engineering with a focus on web applications, blah, blah, blah. So the good thing is that it’s really demonstrating that it’s understanding it. It’s almost giving a summary of the resume. And I don’t think we really need it to carry on. So I’ll stop generating it just there. And then what we can do is we’ll actually use that now. We could at this point, of course, take any advice that it’s given us on how to improve it. But what I’ll do is I’ll go online and I found just here the Python software developer role, which is a lead developer software. Here it is for this company called Baker Hughes. And I’m going to copy this now. I’m going to copy all about that. We’ll go from here. Let’s have a look, join us. Because we’ll take this and we’ll put it into chat GPT now, and we’ll get it to write for us a job application letter that is perfect for this particular role. So I can say something as simple as this.

I would like you to apply for the following job role and create an application letter in a friendly and polite and professional style using the information that I have previously given you from my resume. And there we go. So now that’s my prompt. I’m going to paste in the full job application and then let’s see what it does. Here we go. So subject, application for the position of lead software developer. Perfect. Dear hiring manager, I am writing to express my interest in the lead software developer’s position. It was recently advertised. It was thrill to come across the opportunity as it aligns perfectly with my skills and experiences. As a seasoned software engineer with a strong background in Python and JavaScript and C plus plus, I believe that I could be a great fit for your team. Then it goes on to say I hold a BS in computer science from the University of Pittsburgh and have more than a decade of experience in software development. So that’s really good. In my current role at Embark, I’ve been instrumental in the rearchitecture of a multi page web app. So it’s giving some current benefits of what the person has been doing here and really selling themselves to the employer of that particular role.

What I like here is this part too, is that it’s actually highlighting something specific from the job description that was given. So it’s saying that what excited me the most was the opportunity to mentor and train less experienced developers. I believe in the importance of sharing knowledge and best practices, and I’m confident that I could bring a lot of value in this area. Jeez, I’m going to hire this person myself in a minute. It’s incredible. I’m drawn to Baker Hughes because of your commitment to innovation and progress, the values you uphold, particularly the emphasis you place in the development and wellbeing of your workforce, resonate with me deeply. So it’s definitely proven that this is not a generic job application letter that someone’s just printing out one after another and sending to everybody who’s advertising a job. So it’s much, much better than that. And then it signs off with the person’s name, telephone number, and email and everything, which is perfect. So a really good example there of how basically chat GPT can look at your resume, improve it or recommend it. I recommend any improvements and then also take any job that you wish to apply for and write a custom job application letter or email.

So it’s done a really good job with that. Now, another example of a prompt I want to show you is one that allows it now to basically give you a mock interview for that particular job role. So I’ll take the prompt, which is going to be over here. Now, just before I put this in, I just want to tell you as well that underneath this training video, we have got these. We have got all of the prompts here. There’s I think it’s about 80 or different example prompts in all of the different ways that chat GPT can help you in terms of job hunting. So resume writing and editing, cover letter assistance, interview preparation, job search, strategy, career advice, learning new skills like we talked about, and negotiating job offers, building a personal brand. So, I mean, take for example, learning new skills. Can you help me learn the basics of? And then where the little placeholder is, where you see these brackets, that’s where you will put in your actual individual requirement. So what are the key concepts I need to understand in? And then you can just put in the actual skill there and just copy and paste these into chat GPT and you’ll get some fantastic results and great output from it.

So they’re all there for you. As usual, just click on the link underneath to get access and then we’ll just approve access within 24 hours. And then you can get this and you just go up to here, File, Make a Copy, and then you can edit that copy. Obviously, the one that we give you doesn’t… We don’t want everybody editing it, so you just get View Only, but you just make a copy and then you’re able to go ahead and use it. So getting back to our chat GPT right here then, we’re going to now get it to give us an interview. Now, sometimes when I’m using GPT 4, it doesn’t do a great job of this, but we’ll see. I’ve used 3.5 and it was perfect for it. But I’m just going to paste this in and then I’m going to change this just here. It says, can you give me five of the most likely questions an interviewer will want to ask me for a job as… Well, I’m going to actually put for this job. Will want to ask me for this job as a, and we’ll just clarify that, as a lead software engineer, please ask them one at a time and wait for me to answer.

After I have submitted my answer, tell me if the answer was a good one and if there is anything I could have said better. Then ask me the second question and so on until we reach five questions. So let’s take that problem and copy it in case we need to go to 3.5 to try this out. Let’s try it out now. One second. Here we go. So it says, sure, let’s start with the first question. Can you describe your experience with a leading team of developers? What were some of the challenges you faced and how did you overcome them? Jeez, so that’s a tricky one because obviously I am not a software engineer. So let me just say that something simple like this. I’ve had over five years of leading a team of talented junior software developers, and we have built many different types of software using JavaScript and Python. There we go. So I haven’t, but we’ll see what it thinks of that answer. And so here we are. Your answer provides a good overview of your leadership experience. However, it would be beneficial to provide a bit more detail about the specific projects you’ve led, the size of the teams you’ve managed, and how you’ve mentored or developed the junior developers on your team.

Additionally, it’s important to address the second part of the question about the challenges you’ve faced. This gives the interviewer insight into your problem solving skills and how you can handle different difficult situations. Now, look at this. It’s even given us a better response. It’s critiqued our response, but now it’s going to give us a better response. And it’s doing it based on the previous information that was submitted in this chat. So it’s saying there, I’ve led a team of junior software developers for over five years. We’ve worked on a range of projects from building web applications using JavaScript to creating data processing systems with Python. Typically, I manage a team of five to seven developers and enjoyed guiding them and watching their skills grow over time. One challenge that often comes up in team leadership is ensuring that everyone is on the same page, especially when working on complex projects. That’s true. To address this, I’ve implemented regular check ins and clear open communication channels to ensure everyone understands their tasks and feels comfortable asking questions. And it’s worked significantly improved our team’s efficiency and cohesion. So really good. And now here it goes. It’s now on to the next question.

Now, can you imagine if you really nail this down and you make sure you copy what it’s saying there and then learn it and read it and absorb it before you go and apply for a job, then this is just going to be gold. But let’s just quickly look at question number two. Given your experience, how would you approach the task of migrating our current software platform to a contemporary cloud based architecture? Okay, that’s a tricky one. First of all, I would clone the contents of the server and upload it to the cloud based architecture, ensure it was fully working on the new architecture before making the switch. There we go. I don’t know what it’s going to think of that. I’m sure it could massively improve on that answer. It says it’s correct, so that’s good. That’s a good start, but rather brief and lack specific. Yeah, that’s because I haven’t got a clue what you’re supposed to do. Given the complexity of such a task, it would be beneficial to outline a more detailed plan discussing how you would assess the current architecture, plan the migration, test the new environment, and handle potential challenges.

And now, of course, it’s going to give us the better answer that will help us, and it will read through that. So you can really see how using chat GPT to apply for jobs is practically like cheating now. You have got your own coach, your own assistant. Now, this whole mythology here, or the methodology, should I say, applies also for applying for jobs on freelance websites too, like Upwork. You can take some job that somebody has put up on Upwork that they’d like you to bid on, and then you can write a really good customized application for that job. When I was using Upwork frequently, in fact, I was, I think, in the top five people in London for a spend on freelancers in Upwork at one point. And basically, I would always look for a custom written job application, never any of these copy and paste, yes, we can do the job, sir, blah, blah, blah, we’ve done this, we’ve done that. When clearly they hadn’t really read my job posting. They had just literally copied and pasted in their own standard job application thing, which just shows they’re not really committed and interested to me.

So it really will help you if you want to go and apply for any freelance jobs that you see as well. And I think you’ll have a lot of fun with this. So don’t forget, we’ve got the spreadsheet right here where you can go and get lots of different ideas and example prompts for all of the different things to help you improve your ability to both find a job, increase salaries, improve your CV or your resume, and do all of these different things here as well. And also get career advice too. So that’s it for this lesson. I hope you enjoyed it and I hope maybe if you haven’t got a job yet or you’ve got a job but you want a better one, that it helps you get it. All right, thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next training.
